Stoic Week

It’s Stoic week 2013, and I’ve been learning about stoicism in general, and doing the week’s daily meditations & exercises.

I find the philosophy really attractive. I feel like I’ve always practiced a lot of what I would now call stoicism, but I think this comes from my religious upbringing. Consider the serenity prayer:

God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,

The courage to change the things I can,

And wisdom to know the difference.

This seems now to me very much a stoic philosophy. But I think there’s still a big distinction. I think a Stoic would largely agree but instead say:

I must cultivate the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,

The courage to change the things I can,

And wisdom to know the difference.

I am the only one that can make this happen through natural reason. But I think one could also describe doing so as “honouring God”.
