Apple Watch Charging

The space available for the Apple Watch battery is severely constrained. Unless Apple has developed some breakthrough battery technology I’m expecting 1.0-1.2 Watt-hours (the Moto360 has a 1.1Wh battery). How they optimize the use of that single watt-hour of energy is hard to predict, but as long as it’s best-in-class Lithium-Ion we can speculate about how long that “daily charge” might take. The iPhone 6 has a 7Wh battery and can take up to 3 hours to charge from 0% to 100%.

Given this I think it’s possible – depending on the current provided by that fancy wireless charger – that the Apple Watch could charge from 0% to 100% in the time it takes me to shower, shave, brush&floss, and dress.

Is every-day charging a big deal if it happens really really quickly?

It seems the Watch takes more than 90 minutes to charge from 0% to 100%. At first I was puzzled about this but I think Apple’s battery page explains it. The Watch has a 1000 cycle life while the iPhone can be charged 500 times. The Watch probably achieves 1000 cycle life by charging the battery more slowly. Fast charging reduces battery lifespan.
